Sashiko is traditional Japanese embroidery done with white thread on indigo fabric. The classic designs have many applications for quilts, home decorating and clothing.
In this workshop you will learn to stitch the traditional designs using the sewing machine. Heavy weight thread is wound on the bobbin and the stitching is done from the back of the fabric. To start, you will learn the techniques for marking and stitching by sewing a small sample. Then you may choose the designs you like and stitch several squares that can be made into a table runner or wall hanging or become the beginning of a quilt. A large variety of designs and stencils will be available for your use. Traditional hand stitching techniques will also be demonstrated.
